Module 4 Practice: Edit & Elevate — Transforming AI Content into a Final Piece

Complete During Live Class

This is a guided, hands-on activity that we will complete together during our live class session. You do not need to complete anything ahead of time, and there is no written submission required.

During class, you will work with an AI-generated draft, evaluate its strengths and weaknesses, experiment with editing and refinement strategies, and discuss the decisions that still require human judgment.

Guidelines

Purpose:
An AI-generated draft is not automatically ready to publish. During our live class session, we will explore how human review and editorial judgment can transform AI-generated content into a stronger final piece. You will evaluate and refine content for accuracy, structure, clarity, voice, audience, originality, accessibility, and people-first search practices. The goal is to recognize where AI can assist with editing while also identifying the decisions that still require human expertise, context, and judgment.

🛠️ What You’ll Need:

Access to ChatGPT.
A topic of your choice.
Access to reliable sources for verifying factual information when needed.

✅ Live Class Activity:

During class, we will move through the editing process together. You will have opportunities to evaluate AI-generated content, experiment with revisions, compare results, and discuss why particular changes improve or weaken the final piece.

Generate an AI draft. Use ChatGPT to create a short piece on a topic of your choice. We will use the original response as our starting point for evaluating and refining AI-generated content.
Evaluate factual information. Look for dates, statistics, quotations, names, claims, citations, or other factual information that may require verification. We will discuss how to determine what should be checked and how to recognize information that may be unsupported or inaccurate.
Improve the structure and clarity. Review the organization of the content and identify areas that could be strengthened. Experiment with removing repetition, reorganizing ideas, improving transitions, and revising unclear or unnecessarily wordy language.
Strengthen voice and audience fit. Consider who the content is intended for and why it is being created. Experiment with changing the tone, vocabulary, examples, and level of detail to better match a specific audience and purpose.
Add original human value. Identify something meaningful that could be added beyond the original AI-generated response. This might include:
- a personal or professional example
- first-hand expertise
- original analysis
- a specific recommendation
- a useful comparison or explanation
Review accessibility. Examine the organization and readability of the content. If the piece includes links, images, multimedia, headings, or other visual elements, we will discuss the accessibility considerations that should be addressed before publication.
Consider people-first search practices. If the content is intended for the web, evaluate whether headings, keywords, and structure make the information easier for people to understand and navigate without relying on repetitive or unnatural SEO language.
Compare the before and after versions. Review the original AI-generated draft alongside the refined version. As a class, we will identify the changes that had the greatest impact on the quality, usefulness, accuracy, and authenticity of the content.
Participate in the class reflection and discussion. We will conclude the activity by discussing:
- which changes had the greatest impact on the content
- why those changes were necessary
- which part of the editing process was most useful
- what AI handled effectively
- what still required human judgment, expertise, or revision

💡 Tips for Success:

Do not assume that polished or confident AI-generated wording is factually accurate.
Ask questions during class if you are unsure whether information should be verified, revised, or removed.
Open and review reliable sources when factual information needs to be confirmed.
Look for generic wording, repetition, or unnecessary information that does not add value.
Consider what personal knowledge, professional experience, or human perspective could improve the content.
Do not add keywords simply for search visibility if they make the content less natural or useful.
Evaluate the final content from the perspective of its intended audience.
Remember that AI can assist with editing, but the final decisions about accuracy, relevance, voice, and quality remain human responsibilities.
