Module 1: Getting Started with the Canva Video Editor

Canva is often introduced as a graphic-design platform, but its current video editor uses a workflow that increasingly resembles a traditional nonlinear editor: video, graphics, and audio can be placed on separate tracks and adjusted over time. Before you begin cutting clips, you need to understand where the tools are, how the timeline works, and how a video project is organized.

Important 2026 interface note: Canva changed its video editor from a page-based workflow to a multi-track timeline. New video projects use the updated timeline. Older projects created before October 2025 may still open in the earlier page-based editor, so some older tutorials in this course may look different from what you see on your screen.

1. Start with the Destination

Before editing, decide where the finished video will be viewed. A YouTube video, Instagram Reel, TikTok, training video, and presentation recording may contain similar information, but they do not necessarily use the same dimensions or pacing.

Choosing the correct format at the beginning reduces the amount of reframing you need later. Canva also offers video templates for different platforms. Templates can be useful when you are new to video because timing, typography, colors, and visual hierarchy have already been considered.

Template tip: Begin by replacing footage and text before redesigning the entire template. Changing too many structural elements at once can remove the visual balance that made the template effective in the first place.

2. Anatomy of the Canva Video Editor

Left Content Panel

The left side of the editor is where you bring content into the project. Depending on your account and design type, you may see areas such as Templates, Elements, Text, Uploads, Projects, Apps, stock media, and other tools.

Canvas / Preview Area

The canvas shows the visual composition at the current position of the playhead. You can select items directly on the canvas to resize, reposition, crop, rotate, or format them.

Contextual Controls

The controls available across the top or in contextual menus change according to what you have selected. Selecting video may reveal playback, crop, adjust, effects, volume, position, or background options; selecting text produces typography and animation controls.

The Timeline

The timeline is the main editing workspace at the bottom of the editor. It answers three questions:

What appears?
When does it appear?
What is layered above or below it?

3. Understand the Timeline Tracks

Main Track

The main track holds the primary sequence of clips, photos, or backgrounds. Think of this as the backbone of the video. Clips placed here generally play one after another.

Upper / Overlay Tracks

Upper tracks allow content to appear on top of the main video. Typical overlays include:

B-roll
Pictures or screenshots
Logos
Text and lower thirds
Callout graphics
Decorative elements

Audio Tracks

Music, sound effects, recorded narration, and uploaded audio appear on separate audio tracks. Multiple audio tracks can be used at the same time.

Playhead and Time Ruler

The playhead shows your current position in the video. Dragging it allows you to scrub through the project. The time ruler helps you locate specific moments, and timeline zoom allows more precise trimming.

4. Starting a Video Project

You generally have two useful starting paths:

Blank Video

Use a blank project when you already have footage and want complete control over the structure.

Template

Use a template when you want a structured starting point. Canva templates can be especially helpful for:

Short social videos
Announcements
Product or service promotions
Video presentations
Intros and end screens

When editing a template, keep replacement text reasonably similar in length to the original whenever possible. Longer copy can create crowded compositions and change the intended pacing.

5. Preview Before You Edit

One of the easiest ways to make editing inefficient is to start cutting without understanding the footage. Preview your clips first. Identify:

The strongest opening moment
Unwanted pauses or mistakes
Repetitive information
Potential B-roll opportunities
Sections that need text or graphics
Where music or sound effects might support the story

Editing is not simply removing mistakes. It is deciding what the audience needs to see and hear—and in what order.

Try It During Class: Find the Editor

Open Canva and create a new Video design.
Identify the canvas, content panel, playhead, main track, upper-track area, and audio area.
Add one stock clip or blank media item.
Play the video, stop it, and drag the playhead to a different moment.
Zoom the timeline in and out if that control is available in your workspace.

Save This for Later

Decide the platform and aspect ratio before editing.
The main track holds the primary sequence.
Upper tracks hold overlays such as text, B-roll, and graphics.
Audio tracks hold music, effects, and voiceover.
The playhead tells you where you are in time.
If an older tutorial looks different, check whether it uses Canva's previous page-based video editor.
