M5. Discussion: Protecting Your Work vs. Enforcing Your Rights - Which Matters More?

Creators face two major challenges when protecting copyrighted work: preventing infringement before it happens and taking action when unauthorized use occurs. Proactive strategies such as watermarks, licensing agreements, copyright notices, and monitoring services can help discourage misuse, while reactive strategies such as DMCA takedown notices, counter-notices, and legal action address infringement after it has occurred.

Consider which approach is most practical and effective for creators in today’s digital environment. In your response, address the following:

Do you think proactive protection or reactive enforcement is more important for creators today, and why?
What is a real-world or hypothetical situation in which your preferred approach would be especially effective?
Which strategy, such as a watermark, licensing agreement, monitoring service, DMCA takedown notice, or legal action, would be most useful in that situation?
What is one potential limitation or disadvantage of relying on your chosen approach?
Do you think creators are better protected when proactive and reactive strategies are used together? Why or why not?
